What Is a Private Vascular Scan?

A vascular scan is a non-invasive ultrasound examination used to evaluate the body’s circulatory system, including arteries and veins. These scans use high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of blood flow, helping identify narrowing, blockages, or other vascular abnormalities.

Our private vascular ultrasound scans are performed by qualified practitioners using radiation-free imaging, making them a safe and effective alternative to other types of diagnostic tests.

You may be referred for a vascular scan to:

  • Investigate symptoms such as leg swelling, pain, or varicose veins
  • Monitor blood flow following surgery or medical treatment
  • Assess for blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or DVT)
  • Check for signs of peripheral arterial disease
  • Examine vascular conditions that may lead to serious complications

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to book a vascular scan?

No referral is needed — you can book directly with us. However, please note that a self-referral doesn’t replace professional medical advice. We always recommend speaking to your GP, nurse, or healthcare provider if you have any health concerns before or after your scan.

How do I know which vascular scan to book?

If you're experiencing symptoms and aren't sure which scan is right for you, start by checking the scan options based on the part of the body affected. Each scan page includes helpful details such as common symptoms and FAQs. If you're still unsure, feel free to contact us through live chat or by phone — we're happy to help. You can also speak with your GP for further guidance before booking.

How should I prepare for a vascular scan?

Preparation instructions can vary depending on the type of vascular scan you’re having. Once you select and book your scan, we’ll provide you with all the relevant preparation details in your confirmation email. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact our team for guidance.

What should I wear for a vascular scan?

There are no specific clothing requirements for your scan. However, we recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to allow easy access to the area being examined.

Are there any risks involved in having an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound scans are completely safe and non-invasive, with no known risks. In some cases, certain factors like a high body mass index (BMI) may affect the clarity of the images, but they won’t affect your safety.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring a friend or relative with you. You may bring up to two guests, although for 4D/5D baby scans, the number of guests may vary. Please check your booking confirmation or contact us for more details.

Will the scan be painful?

No, ultrasound scans are not painful. You may feel some mild pressure on your skin if the area being scanned is tender or requires deeper imaging, but the procedure itself is very gentle and well-tolerated.

What happens during a vascular ultrasound appointment?

Depending on the type of scan, you'll either sit comfortably or lie down on a scanning couch. A trained sonographer or consultant radiologist will apply a water-based gel to the area being examined, then gently move a handheld probe (transducer) across your skin to capture images.

How long does the scan take?

Most scans take around 20 minutes to complete. However, the exact duration may vary depending on the type of scan and the area being examined.

Are there any side effects from the scan?

No, ultrasound scans have no side effects. They are safe and do not involve any radiation.

What happens after the scan?

You’ll receive a verbal summary of your scan results immediately after your appointment. A full, secure digital report — including images — will be reviewed by the radiologist and sent to your registered email within 24 to 48 hours. If requested, we can also forward your report to your GP or healthcare provider.

What if the scan shows something abnormal?

If any abnormalities are detected, the sonographer or radiologist will explain the findings and advise you on next steps. This may include follow-up imaging, or a referral to your GP or a specialist for further assessment.

When will I receive my results?

You will receive your full report and scan images within 24 to 48 hours after your appointment.

Is there a charge if I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

You can reschedule or cancel your appointment at no cost if you give at least 48 hours' notice. For same-day bookings, we require at least 24 hours’ notice. Please review our full cancellation and rescheduling policy in the Terms & Conditions on our website.

What if the main purpose of my scan can’t be completed?

While we do our best to complete your scan during your visit, certain factors (such as baby’s position or excess bowel gas) may prevent us from obtaining clear images. If this happens, we’ll offer a complimentary rescan to ensure we meet the main purpose of your appointment.

What if I’m running late for my appointment?

If you’re running late, please contact us as soon as possible. We’ll do our best to accommodate you, but there may be a wait, as late arrivals can affect the rest of the day’s schedule.
